Special Branch agent was key figure in violent breakaway UDA faction

A FORMER British soldier who acted as a spokesperson for the breakaway South East Antrim UDA was a Special Branch agent. Jon McDowell admitted to a Northern based Sunday newspaper two weeks ago that he worked as a Special Branch agent for three years and passed on information to Special Branch about the loyalist killer gang. EirGrid put costs before health

Over 1,000 people packed a public meeting in Trim this week to protest against the refusal of EirGrid to lay new cross border electricity cables underground. EirGrid are planning to build one line between Batterstown in Meath and Kingscourt in Cavan in what will be a new cross border link up. A separate meeting in Kingscourt this week was attended by hundreds of people, where a substation is also to be built along with the pylon network. Free article

Reilly exposes paltry savings from hospital shutdown

The reality of the Health Service Executive spending freeze is hitting hard in Meath and the North East this week. More than 150 orthopaedic patients are to have operations cancelled, while a total of 430 people on waiting lists for Orthopaedic treatment in Cavan, Monaghan, Louth and Meath will have their waiting times lengthened considerably after a HSE decision to close the regional treatment unit at Navan Hospital for the month of December in a cost cutting exercise.
