Call for universal single-tier healthcare system

Speaking on Wednesday at a conference in Dublin on 'Financing Universal Healthcare in Ireland', organised by the Adelaide Hospital Society, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD, Sinn Féin Dáil leader and spokesperson on Health & Children called on Health Minister Mary Harney to scrap her plan to impose prescription charges on medical card patients. Legislation to impose the charges of up to €10 per month is due to be published this month. Ó Caoláin reaffirmed Sinn Féin's demand for a single-tier universal healthcare system funded from fair and progressive general taxation. Bord Pleanála approves destruction of Moore Street

The National Monument at 14 to 17 Moore Street, last meeting place of the leaders of the 1916 Rising, is under its greatest threat after An Bord Pleanála approved planning permission for a massive shopping mall development by chartered Land Ltd. which will reduce the historic site to a façade, engulfed by a shopping mall. Current law bans sale of 'legal highs' to under-18s

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, has said provisions contained in the Childcare Act 1991 can be used by Gardaí and the Courts to address the sale of a number of so-called legal highs to persons under 18. And, according to Ó Snodaigh, this legislation could be easily and quickly amended to prohibit the sale of all of these drugs to persons under eighteen. Free article

Life-time republican and community activist Chrissie Heffernan passed away recently after a battle with illness. A large funeral on the Tuesday after Easter heard Chrissie's friend and colleague Sinn Féin Councillor Seán Crowe remember the Liberties woman with pride and extend condolences to the Heffernan family on behalf of the thousands of republicans who experienced the kindness of Chrissie and her partner Vinnie over decades of work for the republican cause.
