The Mary Nelis Column

Representatives of some of the parties - the Alliance, the DUP, the Ulster Unionists and the SDLP - a sort of 'gang of four' met in Stormont this week to find what they describe as a 'solution to the current educational chaos'. Translated this simply means how to reverse the decision by the Minister for Education, Caitríona Ruane, to abolish academic selection and the infamous 11-plus.

Another View by Eoin Ó Broin

FINE GAEL leader Enda Kenny's proposals for Oireachtas reform (abolition of the Seanad and cutting the number of TDs) are nothing more than a cheap publicity stunt - and a bad one at that. The word amongst the political correspondents in Leinster House is that Fine Gael got wind that Labour were launching similar proposals and decided to muscle in on the action.

Councillors are part of the vanguard of our movement

THE Sinn Féin National Councillors' Forum is the collective voice of 232 elected representatives across 31 of the 32 counties. Of that total, 120 represent communities across the 26 Counties. To state the 26-County figure is not to be partitionist but to highlight it to republicans so that they remember it the next time they read or listen to the prattling of a 'neutral' commentator or journalist about how the 26-County state is some sort of a political desert for Sinn Féin.

THE JULIA CARNEY COLUMN

THERE you have it. If the Pope comes to Lisburn, the world's going to end. For the heathens among you, that's Mark, Chapter 13, from the Bible and the "abomination of desolation" is the Antichrist. As we all know, or should, the Antichrist is the Pope and if there's one place the latest group of Orange supremacists believe he 'should not be' it's anywhere in the Six Counties. Last month, Ian McCrea, the son of travelling folk singer and former MP Willie McCrea, let us know that he's not impressed.

Cúlchaint LE EOGHAN Mac CORMAIC

Ní bhíonn deis agam mórán ama a chaitheamh ag amharc ar chláracha teilifíse go dtí mall san oíche agus faoin am sin tá na cláracha is suimiúla thart, is dócha, agus gan fágtha do na hullchabháin ach athchraoltaí scannáin agus sobaldrámaí nó ábhar dá leithéid nach n-éilíonn páirtíocht ó intinní tuirseacha.

Remembering the Past: Release of the Guildford Four

IN THE closing years of Margaret Thatcher's reign as British Prime Minister, the British judicial system became increasingly discredited as high-profile cases exposed how the British Establishment had perverted justice to secure convictions of Irish people at any cost. Foremost among such cases were those of the Guildford Four, the Maguire family and the Birmingham Six.
