Féile An Phobail : unique and heady mix provides enjoyment for all
Renowned mural artist Danny Devenney who, together with Mark Ervine, the son of the late PUP leader David Ervine, completed a replica of Picasso's famous Guernica painting on Belfast's Falls Road, travelled to Madrid last week to view the original before reproducing the image on a wall in West Belfast as part of Féile an Phobail. Photo: Jim McCabe displays lethal plastic and rubber bullets Interview : Veteran Sinn Féin activist Susan Mhic Giolla Éin SUSAN MHIC GIOLLA ÉIN (85) is a veteran republican who along with her Sinn Féin activities continues to further her education, having recently successfully completed courses in Irish and English language studies. Here she talks to ELLA O'DWYER about growing up in Donegal, the silence that surrounded republicanism when she was young and her belief that we'll get a United Ireland. Interview : Irish middleweight boxer John Duddy
US-based Irish middleweight boxer JOHN DUDDY is the current holder of the IBA World Middleweight Title and the WBC Continental Americas Middleweight Title. Duddy is from Derry and is a nephew of John "Jackie" Duddy who was murdered in Derry by the British Army during the Bloody Sunday massacre of 1972. While in Ireland in July, where he fought Allessio Furlan in the National Stadium, Duddy, who fights under the moniker of The Derry Destroyer, spoke to An Phoblacht's ARAN FOLEY about his boxing career, his triumphant return to Ireland, his involvement with the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform in the US and the changes that have come about in his native Derry in recent years. Photo: Martin McGuinness with 'Smoking’ Joe Frazer and John Duddy following his successful title defence at Madison Square Gardens, New York, Friday 16 March 2007 It is a pity that Susan McKay sought to distort the March for Truth last weekend in a most contradictory Irish Times article. McKay blamed the British and Irish Governments for reneging on commitments to investigate past violence while condemning Sinn Féin for trying to do just that. Apart from a group of Derry young fellas marching down the Clonliffe Road chanting "Free State scum" - which I'd imagine was in the way of ironic and friendly banter - relations between the blue and red last Saturday were cordial. In the extreme in fact given that the Hill gave the Derry team a huge ovation as they left the pitch. Don't recall ever seeing that before! Tá Sinn Féin i gcoinne príosúnú triúr iascairí áitiúla agus go fóill ag cur feachtas Shell chun Sáile ar bharr an chláir oibre. Sa bheathaisnéis seo, le Laurence Marley, tá cur síos leathan ar an fhear intleachtúil seo a d'fhág lorg láidir ar shaol na hÉireann go dtí an lá inniu.

Don't Believe a Word, Spying through the Euro lies and Put occupation back at top of international agenda
I am pleased to note that the whole of Ireland has been exempted from a EU-wide ban on the export of livestock and meat products. Why should we take a hit when the problem is located in Britain? Fair play to you, Taoiseach, to Ian and Martin, and to both Michelle Gildernew and Mary Coughlan for adopting the fortress-Ireland approach to preventing Foot and Mouth Disease from spreading to this country. The decision by Aer Lingus to locate its first hub facility outside of the 26 Counties in Belfast has caused much controversy and debate. While the reaction by interested parties both in Shannon and Belfast are understandable, investment in one part of the country should not be to the detriment of another. |
