In any place in the world, children throwing snowballs would be treated at best as little nuisances or at worst as doing what children do the world over when they see snow. Here in this abnormal runt that unionists call a country, snowballing becomes a major incident, a political disaster, an excuse to stop political change and an attack on peace. COUNCILLOR SEAMUS 'SÉAMIE' MORRIS is the Sinn Féin general election candidate for Tipperary North. Séamie first stood as an election candidate in the 2004 local elections when he topped the poll in Nenagh town in North Tipp and became mayor for the first year. He was, as he put it himself, thrown in at the deep end but he has thrived on the experience and thoroughly enjoys his council work. A postal worker, Séamie Morris in conversation with ELLA O'DWYER, says he now he wants to deliver in the Dáil for the people of North Tipperary. When Tommy Moore ran onto the pitch to replace John McCaffrey with ten minutes remaining in last Sunday's game between Dublin and Galway there was a roar of "Come on the Isles". What was significant was that the roarer was wearing a Vincent's hat! There truly is a new spirit abroad in Dublin hurling. Cuireann Gaeilgeoirí fáilte roimh Thuairisc Chomhairle na hEorpa
Cuireann Gaeilgeoirí fáilte roimh Thuairisc Chomhairle na hEorpa Regular readers of this column will have noticed how prominently does the Sunday Independent feature in the list of worst offenders against good taste and journalistic integrity - a phrase, indeed, that is an insult in Middle Abbey Street today.
Will you eventually change your mind? The last Taoiseach offering himself to the electorate of thirteen-sixteenths of Ireland, and approaching that election not going to serve the full term in office was de Valera himself. March 1957. Fifty years ago. Photo: Barry McElduff |
