Assembly Election : Sinn Féin takes 28 seats
It is hard to know where to begin the process of cataloguing Sinn Féin's electoral victory in last week's Assembly election. It wasn't just the process of cementing its position as the third largest party on the island, or as the leading nationalist voice in the Assembly, it was the other gains made by Sinn Féin in its ongoing electoral growth. There was a jubilant atmosphere in the Royal Dublin Hotel on Dublin's O'Connell Street last Friday as Sinn Féin launched its 26 County general election campaign, in the wake of hugely successful results in the North's Assembly election. The public meeting was attended by most of the party's Dublin candidates and was chaired by Dublin South Central TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh. It is an election tale of an elated candidate, a grumpy one, a caravan and a friendly mechanic. Photo: Polling day - Former Lagan valley Sinn Féin Councillor Damien Gibney, Jim Gibney, Flash McVeigh and Paul Butler Assembly election : Sinn Féin could become North's biggest party
The computer graphics told it all. The arc of Sinn Féin's electoral mandate still climbing, with the DUP vote dropping away from its 2005 peak and the SDLP and UUP in steep decline. Anna Prior, the general election candidate for Sinn Féin in Clare, came home to the Banner County from England with her family when she was 10 years old. Now aged 22 and passionate about music and politics, she is eager to use what she calls her "rebellious spirit" for the people of the county she loves so much. Here she talks to ELLA O'DWYER Photo: Anna Prior Tá Baile Átha Cliath trína chéile - tá tuaisceart na cathrach lán le Yuppies caillte ag lorg Pairc an Chrócaigh agus D4 lán le Poblachtánaigh.
A prior commitment precluded me from attending last Saturday's junior and senior club football finals but ace cub reporter Larry O'Toole stood in and kept me updated. The Deputy for Kerry North was said at several stages to have been "animated" on the sideline, which will come as no surprise to anyone who witnessed him in action in his former residence in the midlands. Especially those who were accused of having been "reared with dolls" on fumbling the ball at a vital stage in a match. Lá le Phádraig, Lá le Paradacsa
Cé go bhfuil clú agus cáil ar fud na Cruinne ar an 17ú Márta mar lá comórtha ar naomh náisiúnta na hÉireann - an Pádraig Naofa úd - agus de thoradh sin, an príomhlá ina dhéantar comórtha ar gach ní Éireannach sa bhaile agus i bhfad i gcéin, ní chuirtear an pobal in eolas faoi Phádraig agus a bhaineann leis mar ba cheart. Agus tá cúinsí polaitiúla ag gabháil leis seo, ní nach ionadh! It is hard to count how many times Peter Mandelson has resigned from various political posts beginning with leaving Labour's Young Socialists in 1971 to allegedly join the Young Communist league and ending with his second resignation from the British cabinet in 2001 over his phone call to a Home Office minister regarding the passport application of Srichan Hinduja, a wealthy Indian businessman.
Plunkett Nugent from Galbally rang me last Saturday afternoon as I made my way to Croke Park for the All Ireland Intermediate and Junior Club Football Finals. Plunkett emphasised the importance of putting aside ancient enmities and he spoke of the great need for reconciliation and healing in a new era. |
