Planning abuse - Developers 'flouting law at will'

Residents of Fatima Mansions in Dublin's inner city have fought long and hard against problems such as drug dealing, anti-social behaviour and a poor physical environment which have afflicted the area. Redevelopment was heralded by the government, city council and the media as a model of success. However as ELLA O'DWYER reports, what has not been highlighted is recent local anger and protests around aspects of the development work including a lack of consultation and problems with planning regulation and enforcement.

Shell to Sea - Minister rejects latest initiative to break impasse

Shell to Sea's initiative to break the impasse in the controversial Corrob gas project and this week's disruption of a speech by Minister Noel Dempsey in Dublin are the latest incidents in a political issue that will not go away. The project has galvanised and indeed radicalised many people in North Mayo and there is growing support for the Shell-to Sea campaign right across the country. Recently ELLA O'DWYER spoke to one local activist, Terence Conway.

The Mitchel McLaughlin Column

Following the hope and promise depicted by the two governments following the St Andrews talks and the mainly positive comments by political commentators it didn't take long for some within the DUP to rush to print setting down obstacles to progress. While it is to be welcomed that the DUP is consulting with its structures and its leader is generally maintaining an uncharacteristically measured stance, others such as Dodds and Campbell make statements clearly designed to destabilise the consultation process for others.

Cúlchaint

Tá an bealadh ceangailte le mo mhéara agus ag titim ó mo ghruaig tar éis mála sceallóg agus burgair lofa. Bhí an áit plódaithe le fir ramhra ag filleadh ó chluiche peile agus iad lán le piontaí agus ag iarraidh bheith greannmhar leis an déagóir Iodálach taobh thiar den chuntar ag cur lagú ar na barra seacláide Mars.

The Matt Treacy Column

The Dublin county football final was a strange affair. Played under lights last Monday because of delays caused by appeals and postponements to fit in with the International Rules farce - more of which anon - it still managed to draw one of the biggest crowds of recent years.

Géarchéim Gabhála san Iaráic

Níl amhras ann ach go bhfuil géarchéim gabhála i ndán don fhórsa ionraidh Angla-Meiriceánaigh san Iaráic. Gach seachtain tá an scéal ag dul in olcas do na Meiriceánaigh sa chaoi go bhfuil an t-éirí amach ina gcoinne ag éirí níos fíochmhaire, seachas ag dul i léig mar a bhí siad ag súil. Tá tuilleadh corpáin saighdiúirí ag filleadh abhaile an t-am ar fad agus ardú ag teacht ar an ráta maraithe leis. Tuigtear go maith go bhfuil beag-ghlacadh polaitiúil sna Stáit Aontaithe le líon ard taismeach acu siúd. Ní áiríonn sé seo na taismigh shibhialtacha san Iaráic í féin agus meastar go bhfuil ar a laghad 650,000 duine tar éis bás a fháil ó thús an ionraidh seo - an formhór acu taismigh shibhialtacha Iarácacha. Ar feadh ar a laghad bliain anois, tá formhór phobal Mheiriceá casta i gcoinne an chogaidh. Ní mheasann ach 20% acu gur féidir leo an bua a fháil sa choimhlint sin.

Media View

The Dublin media trick with the North is two-fold - whenever loyalism's reversion to intractable sectarianism and negativity is so blindingly obvious that it cannot be glossed over, The Irish Times and others slip into hand wringing mode. This is the neutral and 'mature' position of being above it all - the two warring tribes, the obduracy on both sides, the refusal of extreme republicans to roll over and the refusal of loyalists to stop demanding that nationalists roll over.

Letter to the Taoiseach

The Queen of England sends congratulatory messages to Irish citizens in the Six Counties on the occasion of their 100th birthday. She repeats this exercise on the 105th birthday, too, and then every year thereafter.
