On Sunday, 24 September, the New York Times and Washington Post published articles based on the leak of a classified intelligence report entitled Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States and which was produced by 16 US intelligence agencies highlighting how the war in Iraq "was cultivating supporters for the global jihadist movement". The handshake was off-camera, but a Press Association photographer was allowed to capture a smiling Ian Paisley and his party colleagues seated across a conference table to an equally cheerful Sean Brady and his delegation at Stormont. Short Strand to remember its fallen

Thirty years ago, on 16 October, the night sky over Belfast suddenly turned bright orange. I watched this strange occurrence with other republican prisoners from the top landing of C Wing in Crumlin Road jail and wondered about the source of it. It was not long before we heard on the radio that an explosion had occurred at Belfast's gas works in the Markets area. Free article
