UVF riots expose PSNI double standards

THE PSNI came under increasing political pressure this week after their apparent reluctance to confront continuing violence by unionist paramilitaries. In the face of serious rioting orchestrated by the UVF, PSNI officers remained in their vehicles rather than challenge the rioters. Commenting, Sinn Féin's Gerry Kelly compared the eagerness with which the PSNI deployed water cannon against North Belfast nationalists "within seconds of one golf ball being thrown" to the hours of unchallenged serious rioting by unionists. McGuinness urges support for Irish unity rally

Sinn FÉin Chief Negotiator Martin McGuinness, speaking at the unveiling of a Make Partition History campaign banner outside the Sinn Féin Sevastopol Street Office on the Falls Road on Wednesday, said that the national rally for Irish unity on 24 September in Dublin will give people from across Ireland the opportunity to make a very strong statement in support of Irish unity. Glens Sinn Féin Councillor Oliver McMullan has said that he found it astonishing how the PSNI could find the resources to launch a full-scale assault on local people in Cushendall on Saturday whilst they couldn't find enough personnel to protect a handful of nationalist houses in Ahoghill. Leisure complex decision branded sectarian

Sinn Féin's Fra McCann has described the unionist decision to site Belfast's latest leisure centre in the Ormeau Park as sectarian. At the monthly meeting of Belfast City Council, on Thursday 1 September, unionist councillors, with the support of the Alliance Party, voted to build Belfast's newest leisure centre in Ormeau Park rather than rebuild the Maysfield complex close to the nationalist Markets and Short Strand areas. Housing Executive report reveals extent of loyalist intimidation

Up to 1,000 families throughout the Six Counties, mostly nationalists, have been forced from their homes as a result of intimidation, according to Housing Executive information. The information, covering the period between April 2004 to April 2005, has only come to light in the past week and reveals that 959 householders have sought to be re-housed by the Housing Executive. Almost half the incidents, 471, occurred in the Belfast area. Free article

Doherty calls for single Garda Ombudsman
