Back issue: Two families intervene

13 September 2001

THE planned strategy of the Hunger Strike, by which the H-Block blanket men had aimed to bring maximum pressure on the British Government, with the prospect of an H-Block death each week, has been reduced in effect by the decision of relatives under pressure to authorise medical intervention for Matt Devlin and Laurence McKeown last weekend. Manannán - Dia na Mara

13 September 2001

Ní amháin go raibh an fharraige mhór i gcumhacht Mhanannán ach creidtear go raibh sé i gceannas ar an domhan eile fosta. Ceardaí den scoth a bhí ann ach cleasaí cliste a bhí ann chomh maith. Tuigtear gur chónaigh sé ar Oileán Mhanannán agus is é an ciall atá lena ainm ná `mac na mara'. Free article

In Mountjoy Gaol...

13 September 2001

This recently published book by Four Courts Press on the history of Mountjoy Prison is an in-depth account of the institution from its inception in March 1850 to 1962. It deals with all aspects of the prison, from the various penal reforms that led to its construction. It also covers its role in society in dealing with crime and punishment. But what makes this book worthwhile for any political activist is that it deals with Mountjoy's history as a political prison as part of its overall history. This clearly illustrates its role in curtailing political discontent as well as imprisoning criminals. Free article
