Sinn Féin slams SDLP support for DUP gerrymander attempt

SINN FÉIN MLA Paul Butler has criticised the SDLP for providing support for what he said was an attempt by DUP Environment Minister Edwin Poots to gerrymander new council boundaries in the North which were determined by the office of the Local Government Boundary Commissioner. Edwin Poots is proposing changes to the planned boundaries for 11 new councils. Free article

Huge support for next week's strike

AS EACH DAY passes, more and more workers in the public sector in the 26 Counties pledge their support for the one-day stoppage next Tuesday, 24 November, and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions' campaign to get the Fianna Fáil/Green Party Government to examine alternatives to single-mindedly looking at cutting pay, conditions and jobs during the recession. Brian Cowen and John Gormley want to impose compulsory redundancies to reduce the €20 billion public service pay bill by €1.3 billion in 2010. Free article

THE first-ever annual Sinn Féin London Dinner took place at the weekend at the Crown Moran Hotel, where Gerry Adams hosted a packed event attended by individuals and organisations from across the Irish community and beyond. A sold-out event, organised by Friends of Sinn Féin London, included guests former London Mayor Ken Livingstone, Labour Party MPs Diane Abbott and Jeremy Corbyn, actor Adrian Dunbar (who also took the role of Fear An Tí) and Michelin star chef Richard Corrigan, who inspired the amazing menu for the night. Anderson meets with Fujitsu Management over job losses

FOYLE Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has described a meeting with senior management of Fujitsu in Belfast on Monday around job losses at the Derry plant as positive and encouraging. Anderson outlined concerns that had been brought to her attention by workers at the Derry site including that of job security and the possibility of redundancies before Christmas. Free article

British 'air war games' anger families and farmers

BRITISH military aircraft 'war games' carried out over Tyrone and Fermanagh between Thursday and Sunday last week have angered local people and provoked protests. West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty says his office was contacted by several people from the Eskra and Beragh areas who reported a relenting and deafening noise which terrified young children and older people. While the western powers never cease to promote their supposed 'wars for democracy' around the globe, in Latin America a somewhat less celebrated process is underway: here the war against democracy is gathering pace. Take the case of Manuel Zelaya, the ousted and democratically-elected president of Honduras. Unlike Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan, Mr Zelaya won his own electoral battle in an open, honest and fully verified manner. Mr Karzai was found guilty of wholesale electoral fraud by an independent international investigation. Rather than being hounded from power, he was praised when he (very reluctantly) agreed to take part in a second election. Free article

New Sinn Féin Cumann in Sligo

AROUND 70 people attended a graveside commemoration at Mountirwin cemetery near Gurteen Sligo on Sunday, 1 November to honour the life and death of Comdt. Michael Marren who died on 11 July 1921 - the date of the truce. Marren's feats are legendary in the South Sligo area where he grew up and commanded republican forces during the Tan War. Drama to honour Fianna martyrs of 1972

ON Friday, 27 November, a commemorative drama in the Crumlin Star by ex-POWS will honour four courageous young Fianna Éireann members who lost their lives in the conflict in 1972. The republican ex-POWs - from Ardoyne, Ligoniel and the Bone areas of Belfast - will be staging Young Guard of Erin to pay tribute to the heroism of David McAuley, Joseph Campbell, Josie McComiskey and Bernard Fox. The families of these Fians will be guests of honour on the night. Free article
