Basque prisoner on hunger strike

Spanish Special Criminal Court Audiencia Nacional has decided to keep Basque political prisoner Iñaki de Juana Chaos in prison despite doctors' warnings that, due to the state of his health, he could die any time. De Juana has spent nearly 90 days on hunger strike and his health has rapidly deteriorated in spite of the force feeding techniques being used by doctors under Spanish courts' orders. Free article

SIPTU marks centenary of Belfast strikes

A wreath laying ceremony organised by SIPTU took place on Tuesday 30 January at the grave of James Larkin in Glasnevin cemetery. It was the first in a series of events by the union to mark the centenary of the 1907 Belfast strikes, and the arrival of Larkin and mass trade unionism in Ireland. Free article

Sinn Féin meets Methodist Church leaders

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams met the leadership of the Methodist Church in Ireland on Tuesday, 30 January in Belfast. On the Sinn Féin delegation were Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness MP, Michelle Gildernew MP, Martina Anderson (Director of Unionist engagement) Councillor Tom Hartley and Councillor Caral Ní Chuilin. The Methodist delegation included Rev Harold Good, Rev Dr Fred Munce, Rev Bob Stout, Dr Gwyneth Hines and Rev Henry Keyes. Free article
