Hamill RUC anonymity ruling

The British House of Lords will decide next week if 20 serving and former RUC officers will be allowed to give evidence anonymously at an inquiry into the murder of Portadown Catholic Robert Hamill. Scant justice for victim of UDA attack

Compensation rewarded to a victim of a unionist paramilitary gun attack has been slashed by the injuries agency. Jason O'Halloran was initially awarded a derogatory £487 but after a lengthy battle for compensation he was awarded £20,000 only to be informed that 75% of the award was being deducted because of previous driving offences. INO conference : Sinn Féin TD expresses total solidarity

Speaking at the Irish Nurses Organisation Special Delegate Conference in Dublin on 10 May, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said the threat by the Health Service Executive to deduct 13% from nurses' salaries is "absolutely outrageous" and only serves to pour petrol on the flames of an already prolonged and very difficult dispute.The Cavan/ Monaghan TD expressed his "total solidarity and support, and that of Sinn Féin" for the INO and PNA in their campaign for a shorter working week and improved pay. As the nurses keep fighting for better working conditions in Ireland, a new publication by the United Nations labour agency, the International Labour Organisation (ILO), highlights the risks and difficulties faced by nurses everywhere. If Mary Harney or the board of the Health Services Executive (HSE) bothers to read it, they might accept that Irish nurses are justified in their demands. The publication of the document, entitled Advance Positive Practice Environments on 12 May, marked International Nurses' Day. Free article

Contaminated Dublin sludge spread in Wexford

Wexford Sinn Féin General Election candidate, Cllr. John Dwyer, has welcomed the news that his fellow Sinn Féin council colleagues in Dublin have sought an urgent meeting with Dublin City Council officials to discuss the issue of sludge from Dublin being spread on farmland in County Wexford. The move by the Dublin City Sinn Féin Councillors came after Dwyer personally contacted them urging action on the issue. Free article

Connolly and Hughes anniversaries marked

Last Saturday, 12 May, Sinn Féin leaders Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness and Mary Lou McDonald marked the anniversaries of the death on Hunger Strike of IRA Volunteer Francis Hughes and the execution of James Connolly, signatory of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and a leading participant in the 1916 Easter Rising. The event took place at Connolly's monument opposite Liberty Hall in central Dublin. Free article
