The Waterford community of Ballybeg has recently been in the news with the media focusing on problems such as anti-social behaviour and deprivation afflicting the neighbourhood. However what has gone generally unremarked is a strong community spirit with individuals and organisations active in trying to improve conditions for residents. Dempsey gives go-ahead to Corrib pipeline

26-County Minister for Natural Resources Noel Dempsey has given the go ahead for work to begin on the Corrib gas pipeline at Rossport, County Mayo. The pipeline is strongly opposed by people in Rossport. Five local men spent 94 days in jail for their opposition to Shell's development. Free article

Clare commemorates 1981 Hunger Strikes and Vol Hugh Hehir

On Sunday, 7 May Clare Sinn Féin will mark the 25th anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike and the 18th anniversary of the death of local man and IRA Volunteer Hugh Hehir, with a commemoration in Clarecastle with an address by veteran republican Harry Duggan. Free article
Portlaoise Prison Easter commemoration

Republican POWs in Portlaoise Prison marked the 90th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising and the 25th Anniversay of the 1981 Hunger Strikes by holding a parade in the prison's exrecise yard where IRA Volunteer Tom Smith was shot dead during an escape attempt in 1975. Free article
H3 - The film of the H-Block Struggle

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike, the film H3 will be re-released with a week long launch at Newry Omniplex 12-18 May. Co-written by former H-Block prisoner Brian Campbell and former Hunger Striker Laurence McKeown, the film brings to life the unbelievable existence of the blanketmen - the horrific conditions of damp, filthy cells with walls smattered in shit, the inadequate diet and casual brutality.
