Dempsey gives go-ahead to Corrib pipeline

26-County Minister for Natural Resources Noel Dempsey has given the go ahead for work to begin on the Corrib gas pipeline at Rossport, County Mayo. The pipeline is strongly opposed by people in Rossport. Five local men spent 94 days in jail for their opposition to Shell's development.

On Wednesday Noel Dempsey said the latest report from Advantica showed that the danger posed to the local community by the pipeline is minimal.

But Mark Garavan of the Shell to Sea campaign said the report was irrelevant and local people would continue their opposition to the pipeline. Campaigners want the gas processed at sea before it is taken ashore.
