Hunger strike remembered in Slieve Gullion

On Friday and Saturday, 17 and 18 August, Cumann na Meirleach in South Armagh organised a very successful residential weekend in Slieve Gullion Courtyard. They were helped enormously by the ``1981 Hunger Strike Committee'' from the Jonesboro/Dromintee area.

Forty-one young people from the Newry/South Armagh and Dundalk areas took part in this cross-border initiative to remember the sacrifice made by the hunger strikers.

``The weekend was based on a series of workshops relating to the hunger strike, followed by the young people themselves giving their opinions about that period.

The committee has thanked local historian Kevin Murphy, Jim McAllister and Laurence McKeown for their contribution to the events taking place and for ensuring a very successful weekend.
