Adams welcomes Canadian support for Patten

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has welcomed the support of an influential group of Canadians calling for the full implementation of the Patten report.

In their open letter to British Prime Minister Tony Blair the Canadians called on him to, ``accept in full the recommendations of the Paten Commission which form the minimum basis for a new police service''.

The group includes members of the Canadian parliament, trade union leaders, academics and Warren Allmand, President of the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development.

Adams in welcoming the intervention, said the Canadian Administration had been very supportive of the peace process: ``This latest intervention is an important addition to this record of support for peace in Ireland and the vital nature and centrality of policies to the achievement of that.''
