The death ocurred recently of Christy Jackson, a prominent community activist from Dublin's north inner city, following a considerable period of illness.
Although a quiet individual, Christy, or `Jacko' as he was known, was very well known and loved by the community in the Ballybough area of Dublin. He worked for Dublin Corporation but his services to his native city were not confined to his paid employment.
Christy was a central part of the community in Ballybough, for which he cared deeply and to which he devoted many hours of his spare time. He was prominent in the fight against drug addiction and drug-dealing and featured at all the major mobilisations on this issue in the north inner city area.
Christy Jackson's work in the community along with that of his friends and neighbours has seen tangible successes with the re-emergence of a vibrant community spirit and real improvements in the daily lives of people in the area. Development plans for the flats complexes, new sports clubs, youth facilities, great reductions in open drug-dealing and anti-social crime, awareness and education around the drugs problem, greater community participation in decision-making - these are the legacies of the work for which Christy Jackson gave up his time.
Christy `Jacko' Jackson was a real friend to all those fortunate enough to know him. This was very noticeable on Saturday, 3 April at Jacko's removal to St. Agatha's Church on North William Street. and on Easter Monday morning as the funeral mass was packed to capacity.
His fellow community activists and his friends in Sinn Féin wish to express our deepest sympathy to Christy's wife Anna and his children Crystal, Ann-Marie, Andrew and Róisín.
