The RUC's role since its inception, particularly over the past 30 years, places it beyond redemption in the eyes of this community. The resentment and indeed hatred of the RUC runs long and deep in this community leaving many scars and wounds. In fact when the RUC was formed in 1922, it was used to underpin the northern state, was inextricably linked to unionism, was sectarian in nature, and used its force ruthlessly on the people of West Belfast and elsewhere to uphold the state.

Danny Power, manager of the Frank Gillen Centre, giving his view to the Patten Commission on Policing in West Belfast last week.

Elizabeth Windsor would come here as a representative of the British monarchy and all that it has stood for in Ireland. This is an establishment that has been built on and sustained by a narrow, exclusive and sectarian tradition. She also comes here as the comander-in-chief of British forces at at time when two Scots Guards have not only been released early for the murder of Peter McBride but also allowed to remain in the British Army.

Sligo Sinn Féin Councillor Seán MacManus on the suggested visit by British monarch, Elizabeth Windsor.

Sinn Féin insists that prior decommissioning is not in the Agreement. They are right - it is not.

Queen's University Professor Paul Bew. Irish News, Friday 6 November.

The real goal [for unionists] is to end up back again with a Protestant state for a Protestant people in which the unionists will decide just what crumbs of the Good Friday Agreement will be thrown to the papes and what not. It's the same old story in a new guise. Bertie Ahern indicated that he was inclined to give Trimble an easy ride until after the meetings of the Ulster Unionist Party and Ulster Unionist Council. Trimble had played his strong weakness card so that it was deemed inadvisable to push him until after these two supossedly difficult events.

Tim Pat Coogan on unionism's attempts to re-write the agreement. Ireland On Sunday, 8 November.

Given the history of brutality and abuse suffered by our community at the hands of this discredited force, it is seen as granting undeserved legitimacy to our abusers.

West Belfast Sinn Féin Councillor Gerard O'Neill on the decision of Donegal Celtic to play their soccer tie against the RUC.

We saw a number of Land Rovers outside the house. When my wife went to the door, which was partially opened, the police kicked open the door and literally ran over the top of her. We didn't see any search warrant, and the inspector who was present would not give his name or number. They had nightsights fixed onto their rifles which were trained on our heads. My teenage girls were trailed along the floor by the hair and my son got caught by a sledgehammer as the police smashed in the doors upstairs.

Paddy McManus after his house in Ballymurphy was raided by the RUC and his family terrified.

This puts an enormous question mark over the constitutional elements of the Agreement being in place by next May. If the deadline is missed there is no Agreement.

Gerry Adams on the passing of the 31 October deadline and the failure to agree the All-Ireland Ministerial Council. Irish News, Monday 9 November.

If we were waiting for unionism to do a decent deal with the rest of us then we would wait a very long time indeed. I think that is the lesson of the Good Friday Agreement.

Gerry Adams after his meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Monday.
