Fógraí bháis: Kathleen Carson - an indominable spirit

Ma Carson died, on Tuesday 3 November, in Belfast after a long illness. Kathleen came from a strong republician background, and she was deeply involved in all aspects of the republician struggle from 1969 up until her untimely death.

Ma Carson, as she was fondly known to all members of the movement, was one of the special breed of women whose courage and kindness was an inspiration to all who came in contact with her. Many a Volunteer, being stopped and harrassed by the Brits or RUC, was glad to see `Ma' Carson arriving on the scene to give the enemy a bit of her kind of `harassment', more times than enough the Volunteer was allowed to go about their business rather than anger Kathleen.

She was to the forefront of all parades and marches, and the prisoners were very dear to her. She would send cards to every jail in the world were Republicians were held.

The Carson home was an open door, and you were always sure of a decent feed no matter when, or how many arrived at her door.

Kathleen took ill late last year and spent most of this year in hospital, but true to form she fought with the strength and determination that was her trademark on the streets of Belfast. She will be sorely missed by her husband, sons and daughter, and their spouses, all her grandchildren, large family circle in Ireland and New Zealand.

The Republician Movement to quote one of her death notices `has lost one of Ireland's finest Ladies'. Slán mo chara, Kathleen.
