I notice that many politicians and public representatives seem to be placing an almost exclusive emphasis on the potential economic and tourist-related benefits of commemorating that momentous year, while shying away from the core message of `98. Letter in the Sunday Tribune on 1798 commemorative events, 8 February.

I'm sick to death of film-makers stuffing every movie about Belfast with stereotypes - the vicious IRA man, the long-suffering wife, the cliche that if only Protestants and Catholics get together, everything would be OK. Niall O'Dowd, writing in Ireland On Sunday, 8 February.

I have no why idea why RTÉ and the Irish Times are so utterly obsessed with what goes on in the North and have little or no interest in proceedings in the Free State. And there's another thing. Columnist Paddy Murray writing in the Sunday World, 8 February.

The SDLP appears to be prepared to throw in the towel and accept whatever Dublin comes up with in conjunction with Westminster.

Sinn Féin source on the SDLP. Quoted in Ireland on Sunday 8 February.
