Volunteer Louis Leonard commemorated

Sinn Féin Ard Comhairle member and Sligo Alderman Sean McManus delivering the oration at the unveiling of a monument to Volunteer Louis Leonard of Donagh, Co Fermanagh on 28 December.

Louis Leonard was killed in his butcher's shop in Derrylin on 15 December 1972 by ``agents of the British regime in Ireland''.

A thousand people watched as Louis' wife Betty and his son, Tony, unveiled the monument close to Louis was killed. The monument is made from a plaque of Irish granite inset in a sandstone boulder taken from the top of Doon mountain which overlooks the village.

\The proceedings were chaired by Councillor Robin Martin. Ex-POW Ciaran Leonard, a brother of Louis', spoke movingly of his dead brother and of the impact his death had on the wider nationalist community and he paid tribute to that community and its leaders for their unflinching support in the freedom struggle for over a quarter of a century.
