Burst tank leaves seven flats ruined
Seven Dublin families were left homeless when a water tank burst early last Wednesday morning, flooding their flats. The flats, in Kevin Barry House in Broadstone, north inner city Dublin, suffered severe damage from the water.
Dublin Sinn Féin Councillor Christy Burke has slammed Dublin Corporation for not attending to residents repeated requests for a leaking water to be seen to. ``For months residents complained,'' said John Flanagan, chair of the Kevin Barry residents group, ``but no action was taken and this is the result.''
The residents of the flats were devastated by the damage. ``I couldn't believe what was happening,'' said a tearful Kathleen Kane, who is seven months pregnant. ``When my mother woke me, there was three inches of water on every floor of the flat. Water was running down the walls, everything is ruined.'' She said her mother, who is 70, had lived in the flat for 35 years and spent her savings in creating a comfortable home. ``She is taking it really bad,'' she said. Other residents were similarly upset. The Hyland family recently spent thousands of pounds redecorating and the flat was ruined in a matter of minutes.
Councillor Burke arranged temporary accommodation for the families and is pursuing their cases with the Corporation.
