Orange RUC men back on duty

The Director of Public Prosecutions has decided that four RUC men, suspended on full pay, who took part in Orange Order protests at the time of Drumcree in 1996 should not face criminal charges, and the four have now had their suspensions lifted. The accusations of involvement will still be the focus of an internal RUC disciplinary committee, but their reinstatement seriously damages RUC credibility in nationalist eyes.

Three officers face similar claims about their activities in North Down and are facing similar investigation.

The RUC merely confirmed that the findings of an investigation had been submitted to the DPP, but that no criminal prosecutions were to be sought, and that the officers involved were no longer suspended. The suspensions cost £100,000
