More British delaying tactics on inquiries

Sinn Féin Chairperson Mitchel McLaughlin on Monday described the postponement by the British of inquiries into the killings of Rosemary Nelson, Robert Hamill and Billy Wright as "just the latest delaying tactic".

Direct Ruler Paul Murphy has postponed making an announcement by another two weeks.

"At the recent talks at Lancaster House the Sinn Féin delegation — of which I was a participant — raised with the British Prime Minister and his Secretary of State the apparent unwillingness on their part to meet with legal representatives to discuss the timing and detail of the proposed Inquiries," said McLaughlin.

"The British Secretary of State responded that he would make an announcement in Parliament - which was expected today - setting up the Inquiries into the Nelson, Hamill and Wright murders. We also demanded the setting up of an International Independent Public Inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane. Paul Murphy's postponement of this announcement by a further two weeks is just the latest delaying tactic and further evidence of the unreliability of British Government commitments."
