The death of Michael Devine

August 20th marks the death of Michael Devine, the 10th republican hunger striker to die in 1981. Born in Derry, Devine grew up in the tumult of the civil rights protests, internment and Bloody Sunday in January 1972. He died after 60 days on hunger strike. Westminster Government threatens 40% budget cuts to public services and jobs

THE Tory/Liberal Democrat Westminster Government has told ministers to make plans for 40% cuts in their budgets in the harshest attack on public services and jobs since the Second World War.
The order comes from Conservative Party Chancellor George Osborne and it's not clear how its Liberal Democrat coalition partner's activists and rank and file will react to such swingeing attacks.
Taoiseach: No plans to hold Donegal by-election soon

TAOISEACH Brian Cowen has told Donegal-based Highland Radio he has no immediate plans for a by-election in Donegal South-West, where Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty will be challenging for the seat.

Young people twice as likely to be unemployed

YOUNG people are twice as likely to be unemployed as older workers, according to new figures showing the 26 Counties has one of the highest rate of youth unemployment in Europe.
The Central Statistics Office figures also show that Dublin has been the worst region for both job losses and for businesses going bust in recent months.

Johnny Adair to take over English Defence League?

ANTI-FASCIST organisation Searchlight reports that former UFF leader Johnny Adair aims to seize control of the far-Right English Defence League street gangs and hooligan firms.
Adair is now living in Troon, in Scotland, after being exiled by the UDA/UFF leadership in 2003 following a power struggle within the loyalist organisation.
