Maureen was born and raised in Belfast's Ardoyne . She was from a very republican family and worked all of her life in Ireland and in Philadelphia for the freedom of Ireland. She and her husband, the late Phil Garvin, were active in keeping the McGarrity commemoration in Philadelphia alive in the 1950s.
