Once again the PDs are in the news, and for all the wrong reasons, as Stephen Collins might say. But it has been interesting to see the way in which the normal media feeding frenzy whenever politics descends to the level of raw, personal ambition has been leavened by a lot of sympathetic coverage.

Driving around the North one cannot fail to be aware of the proliferation of flags on display. I often wonder what tourists make of this. Accepting that it is not a phenomenon restricted to one tradition, it does seem that unionists are more preoccupied with such displays.

The true political alignment in the Dáil was exposed at midnight last Tuesday when Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael joined together to vote through a Defence Bill that undermines Irish neutrality and independent foreign policy. They were opposed by Sinn Féin, the Green Party and a few independents. The Labour Party abstained.
