INTERNATIONAL : Tamil Eelam fighting resumes
11 September 2008
FIERCE fighting has resumed between the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in recent weeks, with the SLA making steady advances into Tamil areas. According to aid agencies, an estimated 145,000 Tamil civilians have been displaced in the latest clashes, fleeing deeper into LTTE-held territory so as to avoid falling under army occupation. THERE WAS a rumour on Monday that Brian Cody had hunted James McGarry out of his bed the morning after the All-Ireland celebrations to watch the video of the goal he conceded late on to Eoin Kelly. I'm sure the story is apocryphal but you could well imagine it happening. Free article
Súile Gaelacha ar Thrá Lí

Tá rud amháin dearfach faoi Ard-Fheis Chonradh na Gaeilge i mbliana: beidh Uachtarán nua i mbun na heagraíochta i ndiaidh chinneadh Dháithí Mhic Cárthaigh, an tUachtarán reatha, gan ligean dá ainm dul ar aghaidh arís mar Uachtarán. Tá Mac Cárthaigh i diaidh trí bliana a chaitheamh ag stiúradh an Chonartha; toghadh é ag Ard-Fheis 2005, trí bliana go leith ó shin nuair a chinn an tUachtarán a chuaigh roimhe, Nollaig Ó Gadhra, a fuair bás mí ó shin, gan dul san iomaíocht agus d'éirigh sé as i ndiaidh bliana mar cheannaire. Toghadh Ó Gadhra i gcomórtas géar in aghaidh an Dr. Helen Ó Murchú, ag Ard-Fheis a tionóladh in Inis, Co an Chláir, nuair a d'éirigh Séagh Mac Siúrdáin as oifig. Baineadh geit as go leor le himeacht Mhic Shiúrdáin ag an am. Ní raibh ach bliain amháin curtha isteach aige mar Uachtarán, ról a bhuaigh sé ag Ard-Fheis an Chonartha i dTrá Lí sa bhliain 2003 nuair a bhuaigh sé toghchán a d'éirigh as a dhúshlán don Uachtarán reatha, Tomás Mac Ruairí. Ba léir gur chuir cúrsaí sláinte isteach ar Shéagh le linn tréimhse ina raibh go leor athruithe ag tarlú laistigh den eagraíocht agus nuair a bhí athruithe foirne sa nuacht chomh maith. Free article
Bloodlust in The Irish Times

IT IS beyond my slender literary talent to adequately describe the depths of hypocrisy and war mongering to which The Irish Times has degenerated in recent months. The paper's coverage of the recent death of what it calls an "Irish soldier" fighting with the British Army in the US/NATO-led war in Afghanistan highlights this moral duplicity. Free article
