South Armagh honours Vol Séamus Harvey

On Sunday 19 January, a large crowd estimated at over a thousand people gathered outside Crossmaglen to commemorate the 26th anniversary of the death of Volunteer Séamus Harvey. Several bands from the local area of south Armagh then accompanied the large number of Sinn Féin cumainn carrying banners to the memorial erected in his memory.

Sinn Féin councillor Terry Hearty chaired the commemoration during which a number of wreaths were laid. He then introduced Arthur Morgan, recently elected TD for County Louth, to address the crowd.

Arthur recalled some details about the commitment and dedication which Séamus Harvey gave to his community and the republican family in south Armagh. He had been involved with Shelagh Youth Club, Naomh Malachi Gaelic Football Club and also Crossmaglen Rangers. He had lived his short life to the full and in the end had paid the supreme sacrifice for his involvement in the republican struggle. He was an outstanding example to the youth of today and will always be remembered by his family, friends and comrades within the entire republican family.

In a final respect to his memory, the local Burns/Moley Memorial Band ended the proceedings with the playing of Amhrán na bhFiann.
