Taoiseach urged to intervene in Taxi Driver protest

Dublin Sinn Féin Councillor Christy Burke has called on Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to do all in his power to save the life of former taxi driver Don Flanagan from Kimmage, who is currently on his second day of a hunger and thirst strike outside Ahern's constituency office.

Flanagan (62) came off an earlier hunger strike at the end of July when the Taoiseach and TD Eoin Ryan agreed that his demands would be met.

"Don Flanagan is a diabetic," said Burke. "His family are currently extremely anxious that his health and indeed his life are in danger. Bertie Ahern made a promise to the Flanagan family in July of this year when he told them that he would use his influence to allow Mr Flanagan the right to a medical card and pension rights.

"Mr Flanagan's life is now at risk. I am calling on the Taoiseach to fulfil his promise."
