Ahern in Castlerea protest

During last week, when Bertie Ahern made his belated visit to Scotland to unveil a monument to the dead of An Gorta Mór, he was met by members of the Release the Castlerea Five Campaign.

The group displayed banners calling on the Dublin government to implement the Good Friday Agreement and release the five republicans still held in the Roscommon jail. According to spokesperson for the campaign, Jim Slavin, ``Bertie Ahern looked uncomfortable when we confronted him at the Carfin Grotto, where the monument was erected''.

Ahern had been invited to attend the unveiling earlier in the year but pulled out over fears that Orangemen might protest given that the ceremony was happening the day after a Celtic and Rangers soccer match.
