Irish News picketed over RUC charm offensive

In the first of a series of protests against the new RUC recruitment campaign Sinn Féin activists picketed the offices of Northern daily The Irish News on Wednesday, 28 February.

Sinn Féin Councillor Sean McKnight handed in a letter of protest to management at the paper's Donegal Street offices conveying the party's ``deepest anger at the decision by The Irish News to publish the new RUC recruitment ad''.

The letter says The Irish News acted with blatant disregard for the feelings of the nationalist community and in particular those families who have had loved ones killed or injured by the RUC.

``We feel that at a time when the entire nationalist community, including Sinn Féin, the SDLP and the Catholic Church, are standing firm against this campaign, The Irish News' decision to support the recruitment drive is misguided. With this in mind we would hope that The Irish News will discontinue these ads.''

Sinn Féin's Sean McKnight said that the protest was the first in a series directed at those involved in this RUC charm offensive.
