A red herring

``Nobody except the British government has anything to fear from the whole truth surrounding Bloody Sunday emerging,'' said Sinn Féin's Mitchel McLaughlin. The party chairperson was commenting after the British Home Secretary slapped another Public Interest Immunity Certificate onto the Saville Inquiry.

The certificate was issued in connection with a spurious claim from an anonymous source claiming to be a British agent which alleged Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness fired the first shot on Bloody Sunday.

``The issuing of this certificate raises the question: does this individual actually exist or was he or she just thrown into the equation as a red herring to deflect attention away from the culpability of the British paratroopers,'' said Mitchel.

Jack Straw's issuing of an immunity certificate comes as no surprise to republicans, said McLaughlin.
