We will be in contact with the British Government to demand this man's immediate release and to find out exactly why the RUC invaded his home last night. We will also be contacting the electoral office to inform them of the removal of election material so close to the date of the by-election. As the debate on policing moves on this is a timely reminder of the sectarian contribution of the RUC.

The sudden escalation of violence will heighten tension and spark fears of more violence. Thankfully, the combatants have so far not targeted Catholics but it would be a grave error to underestimate the threat to the wider peace process. There has been an enormous rise in costs while fish prices are static. This has created enormous hardship for fishermen who are trying to make an honourable living. The Minister for Finance, Mr McCreevy, has to show imagination and flexibility for people whose livelihoods depend on fuel but are being hit by spiralling costs.
