Crowley presentation in Cork
June Crowley, sister of IRA Volunteer Dermot Crowley, received a presentation from the Vols Ahern/Crowley Sinn Féin Cumann this week.
The presentation followed a commemoration in honour of Volunteer Dermot Crowley, who died for Ireland on 25 June 1975. Speaking at the commemoration, Sinn Féin Councillor Jonathan O'Brien spoke of the courage and dedication of Crowley as an IRA Volunteer:
``The uprising and terrible suffering of the nationalist people in the Six Counties in the early 1970s found in Dermot a staunch defender,'' O'Brien said. ``From early 1972, he was on active service with the 1st Battalion, East Tyrone, for over a year. Dermot was well noted for his coolness and bravery. He was heartbroken to hear of the death of his lifelong comrade, Tony Ahern, who died while transporting a bomb by car near Omagh.
``The people here in the 26 Counties are looking for an alternative to the tired old politics of sleaze and corruption. We are that alternative. Everyone knows that Sinn Féin are the only credible left-wing alternative.
``Let us not forget, though, that we are in this position because of the bravery and selflessness on the part of many men and women who have given their lives in the struggle for Irish freedom, people like Dermot Crowley.''
