Dublin/Monaghan relatives want the truth

A wreath-laying ceremony took place on Wednesday, 17 May at the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan bombings memorial in Talbot Street, Dublin, followed by the annual commemorative Mass in St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral.

An inter-denominational service held in Monaghan the previous Sunday to mark the 26th anniversary of the bombings heard calls for the truth to be told in relation to the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, irrespective of whoever may be embarrassed or hurt.

Fr Martin O'Reilly made the plea at the service, concelebrated by members of the Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Catholic churches. He said retired Chief Justice Liam Hamilton, who was present at the service, had an onerous responsibility of helping to establish the truth.

He also welcomed the swift response to calls for a fitting memorial to be erected in Monaghan to commemorate the victims of the Monaghan bomb. A formal proposal to erect a permanent memorial has been passed unanimously by Monaghan UDC. The memorial will be erected in consultation with the families of the Monaghan victims.
