Adams to unveil memorial
Gerry Adams is to unveil a spectacular memorial to republicans from the Lenadoon area killed in the present phase of the conflict.
The unveiling will take place at the Roddy McCorley club in West Belfast on Saturday, 6 May, at 1pm, the site of the new Cú Chulain memorial. Local republicans have been raising money for the monument since 1994.
``We wanted local republicans to focus on the work to fund the memorial as a fitting tribute to our fallen Volunteers and the other republicans, as well as civilians from the area who have died in the past 30 years,'' said Padraig MacOítir, one of the organisers.
Meanwhile, two new murals dedicated to two local heroes are to be unveiled on opposite gable walls near the republican memorial on the Ballymurphy Road.
Pat McGeown was the Sinn Féin representative for the Greater Ballymurphy area at the time of his death in 1996. Pat spent over 50 days on hunger strike in 1981 and the effects on his health contributed in large part to his death.
Paddy Teer, an internee at the time of his death in Long Kesh, was from the Ballymurphy area. He complained of severe headaches and pains in his ears but the prison authorities delayed in treating him and he died of a brain haemorrhage on 2 July 1974.
The murals will be unveiled at 12.30pm on Sunday 7 May.
