Bilingual School

Scoil Shliabh gCuillinn, the Ninth Bilingual Winter School, is to be held in Mullaghbawn between 5 and 7 November and will be officially opened by renowned civil rights lawyer Gareth Peirce.

The line-up promises oustanding speakers, entertainers, musicians and singers.

Writer and journalist Tim Pat Coogan will deliver the opening lecture and Frank Harte will then give an illustrated lecture on ``Songs as a Political Medium''. Friday night rounds off with a session by local musicians Terry Conlon and friends.

Saturday morning begins with University of Ulster lecturer Bill Rolston examining the influence of the media on the political process in a historical context and Cathal MacCoille of TG4 will deliver an Irish language lecture on the Gaelic media.

After lunch, Gareth Peirce will talk on ``Media and the Law, while at 3pm, the forum chaired by Joan Boyd (Producer of Talkback BBC) will debate the role of the media in the next century and promises to provoke debate from Brenda Power (Sunday Tribune), Ian Malcolm (Newsletter), Malachi O'Doherty (BBC) and Máirtín O Muilleoir (Andersonstown News and Lá).

Saturday night begins with poetry from Cathal O Searcaigh followed by an evening of music, song and dance from Sliabh Notes, Mairéad Ní Oistín and Briege Murphy.

Sunday focuses on the local perspective with historian Anthony Russell followed by young local musical talent.

The school will also host an exhibition of political cartoons from the pen of Ian Knox (Irish News) and posters and ephemera on loan from the Linenhall Library's political collection.

The school caters for varied interests, including Irish language classes, bilingual walks, children's events and satirical political scetches. So come along and add your voice in Tí Chulainn.
