Nationalists under siege

By Sean O'Tuama

A number of nationalists in the Whitewell area of North Belfast were warned by the RUC last week that they are on a loyalist death squad list.

One of the people warned, a woman who wishes to remain unnamed, is a member of the local residents association. She and her children were the victims of two loyalist bomb hoaxes at her their home over Christmas and four years ago she was sent a death threat in a letter from the UVF.

This is only the latest incident in a concerted campaign by White City loyalists to intimidate nationalists in the adjacent Whitewell area. Loyalist gangs regularly attack the area, harassing and assaulting the residents. Last week two cars were burned out and windows were smashed in local houses by what one resident described as a ``well organised'' gang of youths and adults. His windows were broken in the attack and he had to wait some forty minutes for the RUC to arrive. He said ``I am planning to make an official complaint about the completely inadequate response of the RUC.''

A spokesperson for the Whitewell Concerned Residents' Group said that they have repeatedly called on the White City Community Association over the past few years to condemn the attacks and enter into dialogue with them to resolve the problem. They have received no response.
