SFY Spring School

Sinn Féin Youth held a very successful National Spring School in Dublin from Friday to Sunday 6-8 March to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the deaths of the Gibraltar Three and International Women's Day. It was attended by delegates from Newry, Belfast, Dublin, Derry, Wexford, Donegal, and Armagh.

The weekend began with a public meeting on the events of Gibraltar and its consequences. Speakers included Séan Crowe from Sinn Féin and Paul McGeehan from the Committee for Administration of Justice in Belfast.

On Saturday workshops on Domestic Violence, Women and the Economy and Women POWs were addressed by experts in each subject. That evening a public meeting entitled ``Women and Independence'' was held. It was chaired by Lynn Gallagher of SF Youth who was accompanied by Community Activist Martina Kenna and Bernie O'Dwyer from the POW dept who gave details of the plight that the republican women in Maghaberry jail are currently suffering. Kaniah Ní Chisóg of SF Youth outlined the importance of young Women getting involved in Republican politics.

Sunday was planned to be a peaceful day of rest until delegates insisted on having a picket in support of Róisín McAlliskey and the women in Maghaberry. Over 50 Sinn Féin Youth members participated in a white line protest in Dublin city centre.
