Horse owners protest at Leinster House

By Marcas Mac Ruairí

HORSE owners were due to hold a protest at Leinster House this morning (Thusrday) over the implementation of legislation against horse ownership in Dublin.

One of the organisers of the protest, Angela Boylan said, ``There is already little or nothing in many areas for the youth. And for many young people their only interest is in horses. If these are taken away there is an increased chance that some could get drawn into a life of drugs and crime.

``What local authorities should instead be doing is identifying land where horses can be kept, while the education authorities implement Equine Studies in local school which will encourage children to continue with their education.''

Thurday's protest was due to start at 11.00am at Queen's Street and make its way to Leinster House for a rally.

The new legislation brought in last August bans horses from housing estates and allows local authorities to impound them. For owners to get them back it costs £60 transport fee, £25 for a license, £25 for a micro-chip and £36 per day.
