Friday 10 October

26-County Taoiseach Bertie Ahern meets with British Prime Minister Tony Blair in Strasbourg to discuss the peace process.

The 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for peace is awarded jointly to the Campaign to Ban Landmines and its American co-ordinator Jerry Williams.

Two of Ireland's top crime figures wanted in connection with the murder of Veronica Guerin, Brian Meehan and John Traynor, are arrested in Amsterdam, Holland

 


Saturday 11 October

Ireland go through to the World Cup play-offs after drawing 1-1 with Romania at Lansdowne Road.

England soccer fans riot at and after their teams 0-0 draw in Rome. Riot police are deployed.

 


Sunday 12 October

Over 5,000 loyalists march into Belfast city centre demanding prisoner releases.

Loyalists in County Fermanagh clash with the RUC after they attempted to halt a nationalist march on the main Enniskillen to Belfast Road.

Over 100,000 attend the 30th anniversary of the death of Che Guevara in Havana at the end of week-long events marking his passing.

 


Monday 13 October

Tony Blair meets Gerry Adams at the Stormont talks, the first such contact between a republican leader and a British prime minister since the 1920s.

Country and Western singer John Denver is killed in a plane crash in San Francisco Bay, USA.

 


Tuesday 14 October

It is reported that up to eleven countries are to participate in the launch of the single European currency.

A former South African Minister Pik Botha, speaking to the Truth Commission, acknowledges he suspected police of killing Anti-Apartheid activists under white minority rule.

 


Wednesday 15 October

An Irish Times opinion poll shows Mary McAleese to be well ahead in the Presidential race.

Presidential canadidate Derek Nally calls for the legalisation of prostitution in the 26 Counties.
