Sinn Féin to nominate ‘An Phoblacht’ former editor as Mayor of Dublin

Mícheál Mac Donncha

THE NEXT Mayor of Dublin could be former An Phoblacht editor and now Councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha, who is to be nominated by Sinn Féin at Monday’s Dublin City Council AGM.

If elected, Mícheál – who was editor of An Phoblacht from 1990 to 1996 and is a noted historian – will use the title of Ardmhéara, as Sinn Féin Councillor Críona Ní Dhálaigh did in 2015/2016.

Under the City Alliance agreement between Sinn Féin, the Independents group, the Labour Party and the Green Party, Sinn Féin holds the Ardmhéara position in 2017/2018 while the Labour Party will hold the post of Deputy Mayor.

Confirming the nomination, the leader of the Sinn Féin group on Dublin City Council, Councillor Séamas McGrattan said:

“Micheál has been a member of Dublin City Council since 2011 and before that he served for 17 years as Dáil Assistant to Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin.

“We look forward to Mícheál continuing the great work of the first Sinn Féin Ardmhéara to take their seat in the capital, Críona Ní Dhálaigh, in 2015/2016.”
