26-County President Mary Robinson resigns her post to take up her new position at the United Nations.

The people of Scotland give a resounding Yes/Yes vote to a devolved parliament within the United Kingdom.

A car bomb explodes in Drogheda, County Louth. It is believed to be the work of criminals associated with drug and crime figure Pat Farrell, who was killed by his lover (who then shot herself) in Drogheda on Wednesday night.

Clare defeat Tipperary by a point in the All-Ireland Hurling Final at Croke Park.

Environmental activist Adi Roche is to be nominated for the 26-County presidency by the Labour Party.

 


Monday 15 September

Rosemary Brown, otherwise known as Dana, receives the backing of Donegal and Wicklow County Councils for the 26-County presidency, thus ensuring she can stand in the election.

Former Chinese leader Zhao Ziyang petitions the present leaders to review its condemning of the Tiananem Square massacre in 1989 as ``counter-revolutionary''.

 


Tuesday 16 September

A van bomb explodes outside a British crown forces' barracks in Markethill in County Armagh.

A former 26-County politician and junior minister is questioned in connection with money laundering by Gardaí.

 


Wednesday 17 September

David Trimble's UUP and the so-called fringe loyalist parties enter the talks building at Stormont.

Dr Mary McAleese is nominated by Fianna Fail as their Presidential candidate.
