Drug awareness in North Kerry

A large crowd of young people and parents attended a meeting in Tralee on 10 September to discuss the issue of drug addiction and young people.

The meeting was addressed by anti-drugs activist Harry Murphy and Martina and Brian Kenna of Dublin Sinn Féin who gave local people a graphic account of the heroin crisis in working-class areas of Dublin. While the problem in Kerry does not compare to that in Dublin the potential for the situation to deteriorate was highlighted.

A recovering ex-addict from Tralee spoke on the reality of drug addiction. There were also calls for treatment facilities for and the need for communities to work together in tackling the problem was stressed.
