Gun attacks on prison officers take place thoughout the Six Counties.
Gerry Adams, Caoimhghín O Cáoláin and Martin McGuinness are granted visas by the US administration to visit the country next month.
Republican prisoner, Sean McNulty, is transferred from Frankland Prison in England to Maghaberry Prison near Lisburn.(he was transferred to Long Kesh on 15 August).

There are sharp falls in share prices on the London, New York and Dublin stock markets.
Michael O'Kennedy, a former senior minister and EU Commissioner, announces that he will seek Fianna Fáil's nomination for the presidency in the event of an election.

SDLP leader John Hume sets out his party's blueprint for next month's all-party talks.
German police arrest hundreds of right-wing neo-Nazis in an attempt to halt marches and rallies in honour of the death of Hitler's deputy Rudolph Hess; clashes also occurred with left-wing activists.

The Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat says he may implement a gradual boycott of Israeli products to counter measures taken against areas under Palestinian control after the Jerusalam twin suicide bombings.
Tipperary defeat All-Ireland Champions Wexford in the All-Ireland Hurling Semi-final in Croke Park.
Fruit of the Loom rejects claims that hundreds of jobs are at risk at its factories in Derry and Donegal in which it employs 3,500 workers.

The major computer on the Russian space station Mir fails. The situation is descibed as serious, but not life thretening.
British warship is on stand-by off the island of Monserrat in the Caribbean following fears of further eruptions from the volcano on the island.

Over 63,000 Leaving Cert students receive their results in the 26 Counties.
Former Ulster Unionist Party Lord Mayor of Derry is fined £175 for causing disturbances in Derry over the 12th of July weekend in 1996.
Michelle Smith De Bruin land herself in hot water for not participating in a press conference after her gold medal win in Seville.
