One TD and two MPs for USA

The most high-powered delegation ever sent to the United States by Sinn Féin leaves Ireland at the start of September. Cavan/Monaghan TD Caoimhghín O Caoláin, Mid-Ulster MP Martin McGuinness and Sinn Féin President and West Belfast MP Gerry Adams fly out on Tuesday 2 September for Washington.

Their first engagement in the US capital will be a reception of welcome hosted by Irish-American organisations. On Wednesday 3 September the three elected representatives will address a nationwide press conference at Washington's National Press Club. On Wednesday and Thursday they will meet congressional leaders on Capitol Hill, including Senator Edward Kennedy, Senator Chris Dodd and President Bill Clinton's National Security Advisor Sandy Berger.

On 4 September the focus switches to New York where there will be a press conference and a major fund-raising event at the Plaza Hotel. The next day there will be meetings with the editorial boards of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. On Friday 5 September the political highlight of the New York visit will come with a rally in Manhattan in the Rose Lawn ballroom where Sinn Féin supporters will give the three representatives a rousing welcome.

On Saturday 6 September Martin McGuinness will fly to San Francisco while Caoimhghin O Caoláin heads for Chicago. The delegation returns home on Sunday 7 September.
