Saturday 5 July

A crown forces security operation swings into operation on the Garvaghy Road.

Fighting breaks out in Cambodia between rival government troops in the capital Phnom Penh.

Sunday 6 July

The Orange Order march is allowed to proceed down the Garvaghy Road in Portadown after the RUC beats residents off their streets.

Angry nationalists take to the streets throughout the Six Counties in protest at the Garvaghy Road decision.

The IRA shoots an RUC officer in Coalisland, County Tyrone.

Monday 7 July

A leaked NIO document shows that the Garvaghy Road decision was effectively taken on 20 June.

Rioting continues in many areas of the Six Counties.

The body of a well-known loyalist is found after an explosion on the outskirts of Belfast.

Crown forces flood Bellaghy for the annual Orange Order parade.

Tuesday 8 July

The INLA issues a threat to all Orangemen marching through nationalist areas. Sinn Féin calls for them to retract the threat.

Rioting continues throughout many parts of the Six Counties, with crown forces' personnel coming under petrol-bomb and gun attack. 2,500 plastic bullets have been fired in 48 hours, leaving several people seriously injured.

NATO leaders meeting in Madrid invite Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic to apply for membership.

Wednesday 9 July

Nationalist residents from the Garavghy Road and Lower Ormeau meet with 26-County Minister Ray Burke.and Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.
