As one leading and harassed Portadown Orangeman told a senior NIO official on the phone, late at night during the stand-off, that such was the sway of the loyalist paramilitaries there that `If we don't go down the Garvaghy Road, we, the Orange leaders of Portadown, will be burned out of our own houses'.
